The federal government is the largest employer in
the U.S. and the federal career opportunities, benefits,
salaries and opportunities for stability and growth
are excellent! Our professional resume writers know
what federal resumes must contain and what "buzzwords"
selecting officials expect to see when deciding
whether to place an applicant on the Certified List
as the most highly qualified candidate who will
be referred to the hiring official for further consideration
and interview.
Applying for a Federal position is more difficult
than applying for a regular civilian position.
Each Federal Government position has its own requirements
including who can apply, when you can apply, and
the required documentation to apply. These requirements
can be very confusing - and if you do not follow
the requirements, you will not get the job. Expert
Business & Professional Services can help
you through this process.
A Federal Resume is:
| • |
Longer than private industry,
averaging 3 to 4 pages and requires information
such as social security numbers, full addresses
of previous employers, supervisor names and
phone numbers, and detailed listing of education
and training. |
| |
|
| • |
Shows in writing that you possess the Qualifications
and Specialized Experience that are detailed
in the position announcement in order to make
the Qualified List or even better –
the Best Qualified List. |
| |
|
| • |
Shows you have the Knowledge, Skills and
Abilities (KSAs) to perform the position which
are detailed in the announcement and often
requires you to write essays for those KSAs
which are 1-2 pages each in length. |
| |
|
| • |
Includes keywords from the vacancy announcement
required for the job(s) you are applying for.

KNOWLEDGE,
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
In addition to the federal resume, many Federal
job announcements require additional statements
known as KSAs - Knowledge,
Skills, and Ability statements. If they
are asked for, they are required. Typically, they
are 1-2 page essay written answers to questions
related to the job you are applying for. Each
KSA will be graded from 5 to 20 points per answer
and account for 50% of your final grade which
determines whether you make the Qualified or Best
Qualified List. They can be daunting questions
to answer. We offer our expertise in writing these
statements, highlighting your experience to ensure
maximum KSA ranking.

What is a KSA?: |

A Federal KSA is a supplemental narrative statement
that addresses specific knowledge, skills, and abilities
as they pertain to a job series or position. It
is important to provide quantitative or qualitative
evidence to support your KSA. All KSAs are scored
on a point system. Usually, specific examples score
the highest while broad, general statements result
in far less points.
Knowledge statements
refer to an organized body of information usually
of a factual or procedural nature which, if applied,
makes adequate performance on the job possible.
In essence, a body of information applied directly
to the performance of a function which is essential
to the federal job evaluation process, especially
for external applicants.
Skill statements
refer to the proficient manual, verbal or mental
manipulation of data or things. Skills can be
readily measured by a performance test where quantity
and quality of performance are tested, usually
within an established time limit. Examples of
proficient manipulation of things are skill in
typing or skill in operating a vehicle. Examples
of proficient manipulation of data are skill in
computation using decimals, skill in editing for
transposed numbers, etc.
Ability statements
refer to the power to perform an observable activity
at the present time. This means that abilities
have been evidenced through activities or behaviors
that are similar to those required on the job,
e.g., ability to plan and organize work. Abilities
are different from aptitudes. Aptitudes are only
the potential for performing the activity.

are KSAs important?: |

According to the Office of Personnel Management,
KSAs or Quality Ranking Factors rank applicants
with higher proficiency levels on a quality ranking
factor above those with lower proficiency levels.
Agencies should rank applicants with higher proficiency
levels on a quality ranking factor above those with
lower proficiency levels. With quality ranking factors,
the focus is on the level of proficiency the candidate
brings to the job. Simply put, KSAs alone will not
disqualify you but they are essential to receiving
a high proficiency rating.
KSA Preparation:
KSAs are written in the form of well-polished narrative
essays using the CCAR approach - Context, Challenge,
Action, Result. It is important to quantify the
results in terms of process improvement, problems
eliminated, time saved, money saved, revenue gained
or increased performance. If our professional federal
resume writers write the KSAs for you, we will interview
you to find strong examples from your experience
demonstrating your knowledge, skills or abilities
in the given areas.
Our professional federal resume writers pride themselves
